Periodontal Services and Deep Cleaning
If gingivitis is left untreated, the condition will progress into what we call periodontal disease. The plaque calcifies into tartar/calculus and can cause the tissues to pull away from the teeth. This can lead to bone loss and eventually tooth mobility and tooth loss. Calculus adheres to the crown and root surface and is unable to be removed by the toothbrush and floss. Typically, the patient is anesthetized for comfort and half of the mouth is completed at a time. A deep cleaning is necessary to remove the calculus below the gumline to ensure adequate healing and provide a healthy tissue environment in which tissues re-adapt to normal tooth surfaces.
